Kashi Yathirai during Marriage Ceremony.

Aum Sai Ram.

This a very important part of the ceremony usually in a Brahmin Marriage. Immediately after his student-life, the young bachelor has two alternatives before him – Married life ( Grihasta ) or asceticism ( Sanyas ). Being by nature escapist, he prefers the ascetic life to the tribulations of married life.

kAsi is another name for vAranAsi. He therefore ‘makes his way’ to kasi (VARANASI), complete with slippers, umbrella, bamboo fan etc. When the groom is about to begin his journey, On his way, the bride’s father intervenes and advises him of the superiority of married life to ascetic life. He also promises to give him his daughter as companion to face the challenge of life. The bride's brother convinces the groom that there is life beyond education and by marrying his sister he will have a responsibility to come back from kAsi after graduation. The umbrella is to remain with groom, to remind him in the future, of this advice.the real tradition.

As part of traditon added to some fun the groom is literally carried back to the mandapam - "the sacred canopy". From there on, the groom prepares himself for a new chapter in his life as a householder or grihastam. The days of his brahmacaryam are now over and the acceptance of this is all what the snAtakam is about.

However there are different view points on this aspect.
Given below is an observation by Sri. Narayan of Malaysia :

During the wedding ceremony the groom is welcomed as Mahavishnu Svarupaya varahaya ie maha vishnu himself ( or the Siva the equivalent in the Adi Saiva tradition ) and the bride as Lakshmi. Thence , it is imperative he knows no sin, thence he needs to perform a yatra to kashi , submerge in Ganges and comes and does the wedding purified.

In the days of yore , when a man after education takes a yatra like this ( it takes up some months, sometimes a year on foot) , he gets to see the world , otherwise which he would not have been exposed to , thence from Brahmacharya , before moving to grahasta ashrama he come experienced and purified, disiplined ( goal oriented) and fit to take up the challenges of married life. And those days the groom would have been engaged ( nischya dartha) , and proceeds on this yatra and is welcomed back after the father in-law etc after coming back, with this words Maha Vishnu Svarupaya, and given the kanya dhana.

Samnyasa and Grathasta ashrama are both pillars of the society , which is still relevant and have positive contributions to society. This has to be clearly understood.

Mangalya Dharana (Tying The 3 Knots)

Aum Sai Ram.

One Of The Most Important Events Of A Hindu Marriage. The Groom Ties The Mangalasutram, A Sacred Necklace With The Mangalyam (Two Gold Pendants) Around The Bride's Neck. The Sacred Necklace Symbolizes Commitment, Safety And Security Offered To The Bride By The Groom As He Asks Her To Share In A Long And Happy Married Life With Him. The Groom Secures The Necklace By Tying Three Knots.

There Is One Knot For Each Aspect Of The Body--The Physical Body, The Astral Essence And The Incarnational Soul.

It Also Stands For The Three Aspects Of Commitment, Manasa Vaca & Karmana, Believing It, Saying It And Executing It. While Groom Ties The Knots, The High Priest Chants The DEFINING Mantram Of A Vedic Marriage.

|| Mangalyam Tantunanena Mama Jeevana Hetuna:
Kanthe Badhnami Subhage Twam Jeeva Sarada: Satam ||

Meaning: This Is A Sacred Thread, This Is Essential For My Long Life. I Tie This Around Your Neck O Maiden, Having Many Auspicious Attributes, May You Live Happily For A Hundred Years.

The Meaning Of The Mantra Or Verse Is : O! Girl/Lady I Am Starting My Married Life With You From Today. From My Side I Assure You That I Will Contribute My Full Share For A Good Married Family Life. With This Assurance I Am Tying The 'Thiru Mangalya', 'Thali' Or 'Mangal Sutra' Around Your Neck. Be My Life Partner And Share All My Happiness And Sorrows And Let Us Live A Prosperous Life For A Very Long Time Together.

At The Time Of Marriage, The Knots Are Tied Using A Bunch Of Cotton Threads Dipped In Turmeric. After The First Sixteen Days From The Day Of Marriage The Yellow Threads Are Replaced By A Gold Chain, With A Golden Bridge Separating The Two Pendants. The Rest Of The Necklace Is Laced With Nalla-Poosalu/ Black Beads.

SAI SWARANJALI - 3

Aum Sai Ram.

You & Me are tied only by LOVE.
Whatever you offer Me with love will Reach me Immediately.

If you want to understand my Original Philosophy,
You have to leave your EGO.

If your life is compared with a Rose plant,
Everybody Loves the beauty n fragrance of the Flower.

But No one wants to touch the prickles around the flower.

Like wise, your Ego hurts the others
& at last you gain nothing in your life.

So, leave your Ego at the feet of Guru
& spread the Love & Affection to all around you.

How much Love you have. Show it and Share it.
But do not expect anything in Return. then, you will get twice from Me.

Remember That SAI is there in everyone.
Whatever you are giving with Love goes to Him only.

You will become Me by practicing this true Philosophy of Luv & Care.
That is when you will get Atma sakshatkar! The Real Brahma!
