Significance of Baba Mentioning About Shaving the Head

Aum Sairam

An old lady Smt. Radhabhai Deshmukh came to Shirdi seeking a sacred
mantra from Sadguru Sri Sai Baba and went on fasting until the
fulfillment of her desire. Upon Shama's intervention Sri Sai Baba
called her and told her His own story pleasingly like a loving son. Sri
Sai Baba persuaded her to stop her fasting, as He Himself did not
receive any mantra from His Guru. He followed his Guru's order, shaved
His head, and submitted two paisa faith and patience as offering.
Although Sri Sai Baba served his Guru for twelve complete years with
total surrender, he did not receive any mantra from his Master. Guru's
blessing was the only mantra He received.

Here by shaving His head, Sri Sai Baba was rid of all His desires and
served His Master with great devotion. The desires are the darker
forces, innumerable in nature similar to the hair that grows on the
head [desires sprout from the mind that is seated in the head]. The
countless extrovert desires dissipate the energy and enthusiasm of the
spiritual seeker in seeking the ultimate goal.

Also mundane desires are the root cause of endless sufferings and
contribute to the downfall of an individual. In Shri Bhagavad Gita (II:
62-63) it is said that when a man thinks of objects, attachment for
them arises; from attachment desire is born; from desire arises anger.
From anger comes delusion; from delusion loss of memory; from loss of
memory the destruction of discrimination; from destruction of
discrimination, he perishes.

Also Gautam Buddha upon attaining His Nirvana realized the truth that
the desires were the root cause of the human suffering and symbolizing
that He shaved His head and preached the same truth in those times.
